For wood that's grey, peeling, blotchy, or failing. Strip/sand, repair as needed, then rebuild with a proper varnish system.
The secret to longevity. We lightly sand existing good-condition varnish and apply fresh maintenance coats to restore UV protection.
For decks, swim platforms, and furniture. We clean the grey away without harsh scrubbing and seal it for a natural look.
The Brightwork Process:
Wood condition varies dramatically from boat to boat. Some brightwork just needs a maintenance coat; other brightwork needs to be stripped to bare wood before anything new goes on.
Properly maintained varnish can be built up in as many as 15 layers over time. That system only works if each coat is applied over a sound, well-prepped surface.
We will not apply a fresh coat over varnish that is already failing — that just traps the problem under a new layer.

It depends on the wood's current condition. Well-maintained brightwork may only need one or two fresh coats, while neglected or peeling varnish can require several coats after stripping.
No. We only strip when the existing varnish is failing. If the finish is in good condition, we lightly sand and apply maintenance coats instead.
A full strip-and-rebuild typically takes several days to allow proper dry time between coats. Maintenance coats can often be completed in a single visit.
